![]() It works on any platform (Windows, macOS and Linux), so you may already know it. ![]() The design is elegant and you can customize it as you want. I didn’t know it so well, but it was easy to install with a solid first impression. P圜harm is another excellent editor for Raspberry Pi, developed by JetBrains, the same team as PHPStorm for those who have already used it. You can then find the shortcut in the main menu > Programming > Visual Studio Code. That’s it, the app will install everything for you. Just try, you’ll like it □ InstallationĪs I told you, the installation is pretty easy as there is an installation script working directly on Raspberry Pi. There is autocompletion for most languages, a decent theme by default, split screen and a terminal is also included. SVN is the tool I used to save and centralize my code, so the direct integration in VS Code via this plugin really helps.īy default, VS Code already includes features. For example, on my computer, I have some themes, Tortoise SVN and PHP Debug. What I really like is that you can install many plugins to add the features you want. VS Code is powerful, and I probably don’t use everything. Unfortunately, it wasn’t available for Raspberry Pi until recently.įortunately, the Raspberry Foundation listened to its community, and added it to the “Recommended Software” list, making it straightforward to install on your Raspberry Pi, good news! On my laptop (Windows), I’m using Microsoft Visual Studio Code for everything. Get 10% off by downloading it today! Visual Studio Code Raspberry Pi without Python is like a car without an engine, you miss all the fun parts. ![]() It will guide you step-by-step to learn the essential concepts (and only the essential concepts) required to achieve any project in the future. If you don’t know, I’m also a web developer, so I have my own habits with text editors □Įach time, I will give you an overview of the text editor features, and explain how to install it on Raspberry Pi OS Desktop (as it’s the main issue I got while testing everything).Īlso, for your information, I will not include some IDE in this post, as the main goal is to find the perfect lightweight text editor for Raspberry Pi.īy the way, if you get overwhelmed as soon as Python is required for a project, I recommend checking out my e-book “ Master Python on Raspberry Pi“. I will sort in my favorite order, but really browse all the list to make sure there is not a better one for you. It’s really a personal choice, as you may have some habits with other editors, and it also depends on what you are coding. So, well-known apps like Sublime Text or Atom can’t be used.īut I have found a few ones that works very well, in which you’ll probably find your favorite. ![]() Most applications are not released for the ARM architecture. There are many great IDEs out there, but from my evaluation of them all, I have settled on Thonny as a great "beginner" IDE and P圜harm as my preferred "intermediate" IDE, although there is little difference with Eclipse or Visual Studio Code imho.Finding a good text editor available on Raspberry Pi is not easy. I know learners last year struggled with P圜harm, which is my own preferred IDE. We are waiting to have Thonny installed as it looks like the best IDE for Python Beginners imho. There is also an auto-correct version here but I don't show this until they have worked on fixing some code in class. After a few weeks, I introduce the PEP8 check. Learners really have to get used to doing it for themselves. When we start coding in Python, we use the same text editor for this as well, and so the class must use the terminal/shell to navigate to the file location and run their code.Īs other answers suggest, there are no supports in Notepad++ such as autocomplete or autoindent. We use NotePad++ for html and css but will swap to Atom.io next year (most like Sublime Text but free). There is a developer section where you can create code with blocks (like Scratch) and "see" the equivalent Python/Javascript/Lua/PHP/Dart. I start my students on Blockly for coding, as I find it is really useful to develop some algorithmic thinking.
